“i do not wish to be the cause of your pain and...

“i do not wish to be the cause of your pain and sadness,” gently said the moon one day.

“what makes you think the decision is yours?” i replied. “i crossed rivers and flew over mountains that i may hold you in my arms. i fought the rain and searched the darkness that i may bring you a star. i braved the roads unknown between daybreak and nightfall that i may kiss you ‘good night.’ you are my joy, dear moon, not my sadness. you are my life, dear moon, not my pain. you are my love, dear moon, not my regret.”

“your love, your life, your joy are all wasted on me. i do not wish your light to waver and wane when it touches my face,” angrily said the moon

“it is my light to give,” i answered, “and it is not diminished by the sharing. it is my joy to savor, and it is not made bland by the tasting. it is my life to experience, and it is not made useless by the failure. it is my love to offer, and it is not lessened by the rejection.”

“we are too different, you and i, we can never share the sky.” sadly said the moon.

“your fear is a shadow of tomorrow that may never come. your confusion is a thunder-cloud that blinds and deafens your heart. your doubt is a blanket that strangles and suffocates and smothers hope.” i smiled. “but the glow upon your face when we’re together is a reflection of what can be.”
